Are You Fit to Drive? South Australia’s Self-Assessment for Senior Drivers

Senior drivers in South Australia can now complete a free online self-assessment to check their fitness to drive. This government tool helps older drivers and their families make informed, responsible decisions about safe driving.

As we age, our ability to drive safely can change—sometimes without us realising. That’s why the Government of South Australia encourages all drivers, especially those aged 75 and over, to complete a voluntary self-assessment of their driving fitness.

This self-check is quick, private, and designed to help you stay confident and independent on the road—while making informed choices about your own safety.

What Is the Fitness to Drive Self-Assessment?

It’s a checklist developed by the SA government to help drivers reflect on key aspects of safe driving, such as:

  • Vision and hearing
  • Physical mobility (turning your head, using pedals)
  • Reaction time and concentration
  • Medications and their side effects
  • Recent driving incidents or near misses

You don’t need to submit the form to anyone. It’s a tool for your personal use, or to discuss with your family or GP.

Why Does It Matter?

Many older drivers want to keep driving safely for as long as possible. Regularly checking your ability to respond, concentrate, and operate a vehicle is just like checking your blood pressure—it helps prevent problems before they happen.

What If I’m Not Sure About One of the Questions?

If you answer “Yes” to any warning signs on the checklist (like delayed reactions or confusion at intersections), it’s a good idea to:

  • Talk to your GP
  • Book a driving refresher session with a local accredited instructor
  • Consider a formal older driver review or mobility assessment

Stay Safe, Stay Independent

Driving is more than getting from A to B—it’s freedom, connection, and routine. This self-assessment empowers you to stay behind the wheel safely and confidently.

At the Adelaide Senior Driver and Health Association, we encourage all senior drivers and their families to use this tool as a regular part of ageing well.
